Regulatory frameworks and policies for polymer recycling

Abstract

The chapter examines how regulatory frameworks can drive the transition from conventional plastic waste management to a circular economy for polymers. It reviews key international, European, Spanish, and regional policies, focusing on extended producer responsibility, recycled-content requirements, restrictions on single-use plastics, eco-design, traceability, and technological innovation. The chapter also highlights the role of international cooperation, digitalization, industry participation, public engagement, and green finance in improving recycling systems and reducing plastic pollution.
